The story behind a nickname. A first job. The meal everyone came home for. A life story does not have to begin at the beginning, and it does not have to become a formal interview. Start with something you both enjoy talking about.
ONE SMALL WAY TO BEGIN
At your next visit, ask about one ordinary day from their childhood. Ask permission before saving their words.
How to use MyEverLife
Choose a question together
Browse EverThoughts with your parent or grandparent and let them choose a topic. A favourite place, family tradition, or funny story can be an easier opening than a big question about their whole life.
Keep their own words
They can type or speak an answer in their own account. If you help with the phone, let them lead and review what is saved. If you record your own recollection instead, label it as your perspective.
Give the story some context
Include the names of people, the place, and an approximate year when known. Save a relevant photograph or letter in EverVault, with a description that explains why it matters.
Leave room for another visit
One story is enough for today. Use EverJournal for a follow-up memory or a detail that comes to mind later. A relaxed conversation can become a habit without becoming homework.
WORDS TO GET YOU STARTED
Choose a question that feels right.
You can use these prompts in EverJournal or as the start of a conversation.
- What did a normal Saturday look like when you were young?
- Who taught you something you still use today?
- Which family expression has a story behind it?
- What would you like your grandchildren to know about you?
Let the storyteller set the pace
Follow the interesting detours. You can add dates later; the way someone tells a story is part of what makes it theirs.
